Hi Sig; The loss of life in the allied bomber squadrons in WW2 was unbelievable.

But I'm wondering exactly what you meant by "I would say that air-power eliminated most if not all of the need for US tanks in Japan."

Are you saying that the nukes eliminated the need for ground fighting in Japan, or that the Japanese economy was unable to produce armor (or something else) because of bomber destruction of their factories?

When I talk about "air power", I'm talking conventional, since nukes are pretty much a forbidden weapon. And my understanding of what brought Japan to its knees, in terms of production of munitions, was the submarine campaign.

Re B-29 - 345 destroyed?

That is why General Arnold put Curtis LeMay in charge, and he changed to "Bomber Harris" methods, squared. As you probably remember, he immediately ordered the massive production of Fire Bombs, stripped the B-29s of Guns, except for the tail, and went to night fire bombing. He did more City damage that way than the A Bombs did.
