Do you not feel that the Cdn public could appreciate and embrace the fact that a balance needs to be achieved in order to "not totally disrupt" the social and economic fabric and viability of the country.

Here's one of those "minefields" I referred to on Friday.

First, yes, I think the average person on the street sees the issue the way you put it.

Next, though, I think the issue has been removed from the realm of public discourse almost as effectively as abortion. To suggest that a group of people from anywhere could disrupt the social fabric, let alone the viability, of the country is officially tantamount to racism. There is no way to raise the issue and avoid the accusation. "What are you saying, that there's something wrong with people from ...???" It's almost like that article on Mexican immigration into the U.S. -- there's almost a contempt for western society, and if you want to protect it from the undue stress of too many new and different arrivals, they you're contemptable too.

Do I think the situation is beyond saving? Not yet. We need to re-assert common sense, and have the nerve to stand up to the special interests -- in this case, the immigration lobby. I don't see that happening soon, and it's sure as heck not on the radar screen of any Liberal leadership hopeful.
