It's easy to knock someone when they are dead, but the man was fairly nice to me.... Who knows exactly why he did what he did, but something must have been terribly wrong. I agree with a few others here, the fact he was using a fake gun proved IMO he meant no bodily harm to anyone, which is rare thing these days with people who want to steal from others. Do you believe he could not have gotten access to a real gun in his area? I'm not saying I approve of what he did, but he was not dumb in my opinion. He probably used the toy weapon so as not to end up hurting anyone in the worst case scenario, except himself.
