That's the rub, isn't it? I think Lott has been a very 'effectual' legislator... if what one is measuring is political skill and power, the ability to 'crack the whip' and get legislation done. His TV demeanor has been better than many of his fellow legislator's. He is fast becoming a liability for the national Republican Party though, and a handicap for them outside of Mississippi. Is he a 'racist' though? Sometimes it takes a Southerner to recognize the telltale signs of a Southerner's racial biases. My guess is that (by 2002 standards, not by 1948 standards), yes, he is.
