Had they dumped Lott in 1998, when he was getting his ass kicked by the Clinton administration, or in 1999, when he was getting ripped off by the Impeachment Fixers, they wouldn't have to choose today. Lott's problem is stupidity-an incurable situation. He is simply unqualified (though the greatest Washington secret is the incredible level of stupidity among Senate members). It will only get worse, from a pure tactical political standpoint, to keep him. This is a test of the Senate Republicans, whose record of weakness over the last 10 years is pitiful. We shall see...
