It didn't start with Nixon by any means.

Sure, we've had unaccountable secret vermin in goverment -- but Nixon's claim to fame was the enemies list and the intent to fully engage secret agencies in domestic politics.

The worst offense secret government can commit, other than assassinating US citizens, is covert political influence, using taxpayer money to secretly influence policies favorable to the DOD establishment and cronies.

FDR and Lincoln didn't commit themselves to crimes of that sort. Even if they wanted to, they didn't have the awesome infrastructure that exists today, even w/o Poindexter's little project.

The "Crusade" word was warned against, and Junior used it once again. That's vastly different than Ike's use of the term. He didn't have the prospect of inflaming worldwide conflict and jihad deaths of more thousands of American citizens as a result. Bush does. I'm sure you're aware of that.

The important parts of the act converting OSS to CIA and other agencies is still secret -- I'll find the links.

Re: Taxes and debt -- Money ain't free. ANY gov't spending is a tax on the people and the economy, one way or another, no way around it, it must be paid for, it's just a question of when.

It's unbelievable that otherwise rational people such as yourself still cling to the idea that running up massive debt isn't a tax on current and future taxpayers, if that's what you're saying. If you don't understand the fact that money borrowed must be repaid, we'll have a hard time communicating. Sure, it temporarily pumps the economy, and unlike current taxes gets paid LATER. But it is still a hidden tax, which must be paid, carries an interest penalty, and reduces the solvency of the country, which must be made up through inflation, greater taxes, or elimination of other gov't spending.

I'm a bit disappointed that you having been flailing at the keyboard over the unanimous opinion of the 9th circuit on the 2nd. The decision didn't surprise me as you might suspect, but the comment from the NRA attorney caught me off guard.

"It's conceivable that the federal government can pass a law you can't own a gun," said Chuck Michel, an NRA attorney. He said the government could do so and, perhaps, defeat court challenges on grounds that the government "had a compelling interest to ban guns."

He slipped up...the NRA knows that the 2nd doesn't guarantee an individual right to own a gun. Which, IMO, is why they haven't gone after the DC handgun ban or the federal assualt weapons ban. They're not confident they would win. The "gun nuts" of CA screwed up the whole sham by challenging the State Law.
