I think it is an individual attribute, closely linked with personal ethics and morality. The opposite is also true, as your family and mine demonstrated. I've known a couple good old southern boys who related to blacks better than most of us. They weren't afraid to tell racist jokes. Northern whites are afraid to tell racist jokes, but they aren't completely comfortable with blacks. The only people who aren't afraid to tell racist jokes are black comedians. I believe that racism is completely illogical, as is gender discrimination. Until we can deal with and talk about people on the basis of what they do instead of what color their skin is or whether they stand or sit, we won't be completely free. Isn't that something like what Martin Luther King said? Northern bigotry is cloaked in a veil of righteous snobbery. Southern bigotry is more honest and open. Both are evil. Here in Juneau we have a more diverse mix of races than anywhere I've ever lived. Filipinos are the biggest minority after native Tlingits. We have Chinese, Aleuts, Yupiks, Athabaskans--and I don't know how many others. From where I sit they all appear to be Americans first, minority second, and they compete in the economy with everything they have. You can see the effects of that by getting a Polish Dog at Costco and watching the people with baskets going out the door. Dad died on his feet seven years ago. He was 83, and was preparing for the third leg of the last cross-country solo flight he needed to get his pilot's license. Thanks for your comment.
