Sorry to hear about your sister. Hope she quits smoking and starts doing whatever she can to improve her health.

My first fulltime job was with the State of Louisiana in the mapping section (draftsman trainee). A couple of weeks after I started they put my name in the monthly newsletter as a new employee, and a long time employee with the same last name came to visit me to see if we were related, which we were. Second cousins.

He was the first person I'd ever seen talking with an electronic gizmo that amplified his vocal cords -- can't remember the exact details now but my recollection was that he'd had a laryngotomy -- he definitely had not stopped smoking and was still a chain smoker -- with emphysema -- never been sure if the next part is true or imagined -- I think he was inhaling smoke through a laryngectomy hole?

He died soon afterwards. Lung cancer and/or emphysema.

Addictive behavior, pigheadedness, and world class denial run in my family.

John, The tragedy that has befallen you Sister is a sad thing, and I am sure it brings a great deal of pain to you. Tobacco is a curse that does horrible things to some people. My Dad died of emphysema and still wanted to light up when he was on oxygen. I didn't quit until July of 2000 after smoking since I was 14. That was 52 years of cheating disaster, but there are no indications of damage, so I may have been one of the lucky ones. I, also, finished more than my lifetime allocation of alcohol in October of 97, but I have not had any craving for booze, but the smell of cigarettes can sometimes drive me crazy.

Although very few of us, as posters, can call each other friends, you have many good acquaintances that support you in such a time of distress.
