You are right about fights in the family being highly vicious. But according to the scriptures, Ishmael is the son of the slave girl, Hagar, and an illegitimate one at that since she and Abraham were not married. In ancient times, property was usually inherited by the eldest son. In this instance, Ishmael happens to be older than Isaac. But Abraham showed favoritism towards Isaac or so it would appear. No wonder there is so much strife between their respective descendants today, eh? But, mind you, lots of modern folks these days don't believe the Biblical story one iota! Well, we will have to let the drama of history play itself out.
