Well one thing I know is that all modern day recessions have been associated with oil prices in excess of $20 a barrel. Clearly voters vote with their pocketbooks, unless you stand for really liberal whacked out ideas.

Bush Administration's Foreign Policy: That's a plausible hypothesis, and I do think it's a secondary policy goal. Personally, I believe fighting the proliferation of nuclear and biologic technologies is the administration's primary foreign policy goal. If correct, that has profound implications for our country's economic future as well. I've been fascinated/disturbed as I read about the S Curve concept that says new technologies invariably spread and become widely available. It seems to me that history also shows that mankind's destructive technologies also spread and become widely available as well. If so, the Bush Administration is fighting what is a non-winnable war to prevent other countries from acquiring the technologies of mass destruction that we already possess, or to obliterate nascent bio or nuclear technologies being developed by less advanced and unfriendly nations. Over time, such technologies will invariably proliferate to the point where we'd need to be perpetually at war with other countries. Even now, such medium level powers as Pakistan and North Korea have fairly advanced capabilities, and we probably can't do much about it.
