Actually, I have to agree with this particular representation of my past political views. My views of Nixon can hardly be stated negatively enough. And more than a few cheers went up from my quarters when he was nailed for Watergate.

But I'm not talking about that here. I'm talking about the ongoing deal, started with Nixon, in which the Reps aggressively courted white Southerners by using the code words of racism. I think it's diminishing, certainly hope so, as the culture of racism dissipates (I don't mean the structures of discrimination since some are still around), but it's around. Check my post to Nadine about Louisiana and Michigan. And there's little doubt Bush used it in at least the South Carolina portion of his attempt to get the Rep nomination in 2000. Check the McCain folk on this one.
