Fred,
Did you have that visceral reaction to the Trent Lott comments as i did. Boy that brought me back in time. Its amazing how much progress has been made given the world that existed in 1964, much less 1948. Braver souls than I led the civil rights crusade in the South. Andy Goodman was a classmate of mine at CCNY. Ross Barnett(miss racist gov) once spoke at CCNY. Liberals believe in free speech and that racist pig came to the campus in Harlem. We had tomatoes or eggs(cant remember which) to throw. Back then i had a great arm and hurled one-- a high arcing throw. Later in the day the NY Post(the then liberal rag) showed the picture of the splattered of tomato on the governuhs coat. To this day i think it was mine that hit him. I am still proud of that throw.
Anyway Lott is no racist but he constantly plays the race card. But boy did he mispeak. Ole stroms 48 candidacy which is before my time had no redeeming value. All that hatred culminated in the bombing of that montgomery church killing those four beautiful young girls, turning the dogs lose on civil rights folks, the pictures of white southerners abusing blacks at a walgreens lunch counter etc etc.
For not being cognicant of all that and praising stroms candidacy, ole trent deserves to lose his position of power. I am not a political correctness type of guy, but in this case Trent went too far by not understanding american historical imperatives. mike

Apologies… I should have read more attentively. Let’s make a deal: I’ll read yours posts closer, and you read mine -g. Interesting, that in your reply you chose to mention Jordan – the “home” of the original Muslim ‘Jihad’ against an aggressive disruptive element, which at the time threatened their countries stability and even its survival.

Still, I think that trying to “buy” the support of Muslim moderates (as you said we “bought” Musharraf) simply will not work.

I think that ‘moderates’ are sufficiently ‘sold’ on the West… this is part of the reason that the extremists have become more assertive in the first place. People will not fight and risk their lives for an opportunity to sell their goods to America at deflated prices… They WILL stand up and fight, however, if they see a real and present danger to themselves and their families.

I hope that they will understand that they ARE in such a danger, and that they’ll understand it SOON. We – and those Muslim Moderates – are tied up in this together: either we together get THEIR extremists under control, or we’ll both suffer the consequences… and they’ll be in one hell of a lot more trouble than we.
