When Franklin assessed dangers and what liberties were "essential," small pox wasn't among the dangers being considered. Neither were anthrax, dirty bombs or suicide bombings of buildings full of thousands of people.

Of course I believe what's being proposed will not be restricted to use in national security/safety matters. I believe the state will inevitably seize the opportunity to weaken the power of all opposition, including domestic political dissent or even criticism. If you can't get information, how can you criticize it?

Don't the security measures being proposed essentially make the U.S. something of a clone of Britain? I mean, has the UK ever had a First Amendment equivalent?

And I'm not a scholar of your Official Secrets Act, but would be interested to know what you think of it personally.
