Great quote. I emphatically deny some modern philosophers' attempts at arguing that there is a moral obligation to be charitable. That, to me, is like arguing for mandatory volunteer service. It is a contradiction in terms. Notwithstanding the issues I have with an alleged moral obligation to be the mere means to someone else's end, an obligation to be charitable robs the idea of charity of all meaning. Sympathy becomes "surgical" - merely calculated. That doesn't accurately describe the world, IMO. Derek
