Hi zonder; I recently read this book, and it gives some insight into the relationship between vision and comprehension, I think:

Wild Minds: What Animals Really Think
search.barnesandnoble.com

The book discusses the brain "tool kit" that various animals possess. Part of that is a circuit that distinguishes the difference between objects and subjects. That is, between things that are moved around and things that are self motivated. I wonder if there is a connection to autism.

I do know that when I finally realized that to improve my art I had to ignore the nature of things and instead think about how they appeared, I spent a few weeks staring at the world with new eyes. The simplest object becomes very complex. Sunlight dappling the leaves of a tree becomes suddenly worthy of intense study.
