Mr. Day remarks were inexcusable, they resulted in a huge taxpayer payment that is still being contested.

That's certainly the conventional wisdom, that his remarks were inexcusable. And if one were to go solely by the coverage in the mainstream media, it would be impossible to conclude otherwise. Personally, I'm not convinced that that was the whole of the story. Yes indeed, the cost to the Alberta taxpayer is contentious, and the majority agree that it was a waste. I'll certainly agree that the very concept of a fund to cover such expenses was poorly-considered.
Did that legacy make Harper's job more difficult? Absolutely. Impossible? Possibly. Harper is trying damned hard to stick to his knitting. By his nature, he is a no B.S. individual. There is no doubt in my mind as to his competence. Whether playing the game differently is something to which the voter will respond, well, I guess we'll find out.

Can the Alliance and the Bloc work together? Tactically, sure, why not. But strategically? Their philosophies are utterly incompatible. The Canadian Alliance is a federalist party, full stop. The Bloc is separatist. On that there is no common ground.
