The angry rhino metaphor, as offensive as it is to some Americans, seems to be an apt description for how my country is perceived by the world. I wish Americans, who are feeling justifiably threatened for the first time, would spend less time saber-rattling and more effort understanding the importance of a broad base of support.

"...the adolescent change of direction... an angry rhino, indeed...

The US has had a nice developmental period. We have been protected by the oceans while being able to build our infrastructure and deploy weaponry in strategic places around the world. For a world power, we have had a relative sence of safety during this time. Now for the first time in a long time, we have cause for real fear. Fear begets anger, anger leads to violent over reactions. A sense of being right and being unjustly harmed can lead to abusive reactions. The third world is suffering from unbearable poverty. They have been tramatized by centuries of oppression and injustice at the hands of tyranical dictators and unscrupulous leaders, and are beginning to boil up over it all. Other world superpowers are in the wings in the ready to swoop. Mean while President Bush with all his positive characteristics is far from the charismatic type that engenders confidence. Hey, somethin's happenin' here...there's a man with a gun over there...better stop now...what's that sound....evry body look what's goin roun...
