The liberal elite don't like Lott, and see this as an ideal opportunity to bring him down. And the media play right into it.

Contrast this with the reaction when Democratic Senator Byrd used the N word. Barely a ripple in the political fabric.

There is a clear double standard.

That said, Lott does have and always had had problems with race. But he was raised in a time and place where segregation was the accepted way of life, as inbred into him as the concept that literacy is a good thing is inbred into most contemporary liberals. Equally hard to get root out -- one can say one is no longer a believer, but few people can totally control their basic inbred feelings.
