I agree with you. It's silly to make an issue out of Lott when there have been statements that were much worse. I don't like Lott, and I don't agree with him, but turning indiscriminately on political figures is not a good way for the media to behave, I think. I prefer substance to silliness and speculation.

I'm not sure Lott has any more problems with race than anyone else of his generation- and he certainly didn't appear to be talking about race. It was, after all, a celebration for someone, and he was just being unctuously complimentary of Strom. Extemporaneous speaking doesn't bring out the best in anyone. You can't always be vetting every word that comes out of your mouth, and the occasion was not exactly formal.
