Excellent post Neo. History is a neglected subject today. Some might be a little stunned that I might write a post supporting reparation in some way. My true intent is that it might be possible to reach some sort of compromise in an effort to find closure on the issue of slavery.

Obviously, the government cannot just start mailing out checks. I do believe though that just as the Native American situation was unique so is the situation for decedents of slavery.

A possibly acceptable approach would be to create some kind of scholastic endowment of say a billion dollars and let African Americans run, invest, and manage it. This is not a trivial sum, but manageable.

Given that there are some 36 million Black Americans, I think such a plan would be much more fruitful than mailing out 28 dollar checks.

We have come a long way, but there is a hard core of bitterness and suspicion among some blacks

It is not entirely unfounded. So long as the notion survives that racism and segregation might be allowed, if only in pockets, protected by local control and private property, then the problem will persist and periodicly grow.

That is why I think the best course is to legislate the outcome, let the participants determine how segregation, Jim Crow laws, and any visible manifistation of the same are to be eliminiated, and then have them eliminate it. Such a process is usually called Affirmative Action. It is not a goal, but a process to achieve a goal. So long as some think that the process can be ignored, or drug out, or redefined or anything other than be addressed, they will not accept the outcome as inevitable. 50 years is long enough.
