Amsterdam is a gem of a city. Beautiful especially in the summer, with its canals and quaint little buildings. Not to mention the parties <g> I have to mention that the bad toilet habits are in the Red Light District (where prostitution is legal and women stand in windows clad in bikinis) of Amsterdam only. Nowhere else in Netherlands is this customary, apparently. I muse that these disgusting habits are a function of the cavalier attitude and tolerance to alcohol and drugs My understanding is that it is mostly due to the fact that there is a lot of human traffic in all hours of the day and night in the Red Light District and no available toilets. Tourists flock in and stay there all day (and night). Add to this the beer consumption, and the need to urinate can get pretty urgent, I suppose. I muse that these disgusting habits are a function of the cavalier attitude and tolerance to alcohol and drugs Alcohol, definitely. As for drugs, I would not be so sure, for I believe to the extent they affect toilet urgencies, they are on the inhibiting side - in most clubs, I remember gaping at people gulping down leters of water and (while sweating profusely) never needing to urinate. Something to do with amphetamines clamping down on the necessary muscles, I am told. Still, don't let all this prevent you from visiting Amsterdam. All that puts me off from going there very often is the weather - it is too cold for my Mediterranean skin from October all the way down to May <g>
