Robert Salaisdis re: "retail" computer sales

The sales in "Don Green's" survey have become all but irrelevant. They are basically surveys only of computers sold through "big-box" chains like CompUSA, and are now a small fraction of total computer sales. Note eMachines in the #3 position: in its last quarter as a public company, CY 3Q01, eMachines sold just 195K computers worldwide, about 1/4 as many as Apple. And, as you note, Dell isn't on that list at all, and they are the largest seller of PCs, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

It's not an error that Dell was excluded, it's just that either "Don Green" intentionally presented a misleading stat, or was highly ignorant in presenting this stat as if it was particularly significant for Apple, which has sold most of its computers outside this "retail" channel for some time now (Apple's "retail" channel is now mostly handled through its own stores, its online store, or "small-box" resellers, many of which are Mac-only, none of which are measured in statistics like this one).

"Don Green" either ain't too bright, or else he's intentionally trying to mislead.

I hope to have my real worldwide marketshare figures for Apple's fiscal year 2002 available here later tonight, by the way. As a brief preview, Apple was one of only two top PC manufacturers that gained market share during that period, the other being Dell.

Buona fortuna

Remember that White Boxes never get listed in these brand name listings when it comes to desktops. Currently they make up about 50% of the total PC desktop marketplace. I would therefore divide all the desktop figures by 2.

Apple and Dell make more than half their sales online... so over half of Apple's sales are not showing up in this retail survey....

and White boxes are not purchased by the eduaction market and the typical home consumer... the only two markets Apple is in...

and white boxes make up no where near 50% of sales.... the sales they do take up are cutting into dells market share though....
