Powell can be a voice of reason. I do not see how Ms. Murray's comments can be taken in the manner implied on this board. It is easier to see Lott's comments as supportive of segregation, and it is a big STRETCH to see them that way, imo. But Ms. Murray's comments are in no way supportive of Bin Laden. They are more along the lines of "even the devil does such and such good, maybe we should be doing that good as well..."

I had no idea Bin Laden was doing any good at all. The fact that he did tremendously bad things to us, does not mean he couldn't have done some good for someone else some WHERE else. To get angry about someone mentioning that seems illogical to me. I simply have never understood such an emotional response to seemingly neutral facts. If Hitler was kind to animals (which I believe he was) and established a foundation to help them (And I'm not aware that he did), one ought to be able to mention that, WITHOUT being thought of as a Hitler sympathizer.

Colin Powell said the way to defeat terrorism is to defeat poverty. This is basically the same statement made by Senator Patty Murray. Of course, you won't criticize Powell. He is a Republican and therefore, above criticism.

A desire to destroy wealth and to slaughter innocent human beings cannot be explained by a lack of money or a poor quality of life—only by anti-wealth, anti-life ideas.

So if Powell's statement was indeed the same (and I doubt it was) consider him critized.

It is self-evident that defeating poverty will go a long way toward defeating terrorism. The difference between Patty and Powell is that Patty thinks it will just take money and Powell understands that it will involve an infinitely more difficult change in culture.

Kenneth E. Phillipps --

<<the way to defeat terrorism is to defeat poverty>>

Are Bin Ladden and, say, the South Arabians groups that are financing the terrorism poor? Are those that turn themselves into bombs are doing so because of a malnutrition or a lack of comfort in their houses? So, give them a potato and a recliner, and their rebellion would be quenched? Or maybe they are driven by a burning feeling of a gross unfairness, indignity and so on? If so, NOTHING will stop them except the Fairness no matter how poor or rich they are. And the solution to the terrorism then -- what??

What a lame attempt at deflection! Patty Murray told SCHOOL CHILDREN that they should appreciate the GOOD OBL did. She should immediately resign, or Washington State should IMMEDIATELY re-call her. The shame of Washington State will not soon be washed away...

kenny only a stupid person would suggest that comparison as a justification of bringing an evil murderer into the comparison. Other than the stupid murray's assertions, there is no evidence of any good work done by binnie.

It was a stupid assertion sans any reason just like your fed rate prediction. It seems you think just like murray and murray thinks like you which is to say neither of you think.

Do his deed rise to 1 millionth the deeds and actions of Americans who have given their lives and money to save millions of people.

You figure the woman in Afghanistan all love binnie. LOL...

Get you head out of your ass.
