Barron's has a spike of interest in American Power Conversion (APCC), which makes the power-plug devices that protect computers from electrical surges. Even with the computer hardware business in the doldrums, the company has raised earnings and margin as it cut staff and introduced new products. Overseas sales also climbed, Barron's notes. Shares trade at roughly 22 times this year's net profit and 20 times next year's expectation. Other positives: Minimal long-term debt, strong cash flow and added market share from new products.
