Being practical is not appeasement. Appeasement is giving in to an aggressor, because you fear war. Having a practical foreign policy that doesn't leave you exposed, is hardly appeasement, imo. I'm all for pissing people off if no actual harm accrues, but in this case what do we really get for pissing off the Arab world? I can't say I really want to subsidize them either. I'd prefer to keep the money at home, and make sure every American child was fed and clothed properly, and educated well, in schools that were all up to code, in cities that were relatively well maintained, and free from toxins.
