Remember that, about one year ago, Israeli PM Sharon publicly threatened the US and compared the Mideast crisis with WWII (he said something like "Don't appease the Arabs at the expense of Israel... Israel will not be Czechoslovakia, etc) So, who's threatening whom? The US? Russia? Israel? Iran? Iraq? The Judeofascists (arch-Zionists & Christian Zionists)? Islamic activists? The ghost of bin Laden? And finally, who's conspiring to assassinate President Bush? I keep reading articles about Bush's unprecedented sway... According to a NYT article, the White House has never been so powerful since LBJ... Well, I for one keep the tally of Bush's "casualties" so far: Reverend Falwell, the Muslim-basher, Trent Lott, the FBI (poised to be cannibalized by the new Homeland intelligence Dept), most EU leaders (from Schroeder to Chirac to Putin [Chechnya])... As I said, GWB is increasingly playing the same screenplay as JFK was in 1963... I'm afraid a Lott of people won't regret his "brutal removal" --and his replacement by warmonger Cheney.... Gus

To say that desperation, lack of hope and such are the source of terrorism cannot be squared with what we know of the 911 terrorists and their leaders. Bin Laden, as we know, is a multi-millionaire. Dr. al-Zawahari, his number two, is an Egyptian surgeon. Muhammad Atta was a well-bred member of the middle class; sophisticated and well-connected enough to study advanced engineering in Germany. Other conflicts involving radical Muslim groups do not involve,as far as we can see, desperation, or "oppression." What of today's blast in the Phillipines that killed 13 Catholics, or the gruesome events in East Timor not long ago? Are you missing a religious component of this conflict that cannot be solved (as westerners believe all things can be solved) by providing "opportunity" (a/k/a money)?
