To say that desperation, lack of hope and such are the source of terrorism cannot be squared with what we know of the 911 terrorists and their leaders.

I agree. What I have said re desperation, poverty etc is that they are the reason why the Arab population in general support the terrorists. In order to fight terrorism effectively, the sources of this support need to be addressed.

Are you missing a religious component of this conflict that cannot be solved (as westerners believe all things can be solved) by providing "opportunity" (a/k/a money)?

I am not sure that the Muslim religion, which has been around for a long long time, has an incurable, fundamental defect that causes the current problem. It is the unifying factor for these people, not the source of the problem.

Let us look at the Chechens. They want their independence. (Not "opportunity" (aka money) as you suggest. If they had their own country, do you think they would continue to attack the Russians, whose army, by the way, has been occupying their land for a while now?
