Here is the NYT update today on David's problem. Venezuelan Strikers Reject a Truce Call By REUTERS CARACAS, Venezuela, Dec. 23, Venezuelan opposition groups today rejected an appeal by the government of President Hugo Chávez for a truce over Christmas as the prospect loomed of a holiday overshadowed by a crippling general strike. "Not one step back, the strike continues," declared Carlos Ortega, an anti-Chávez union leader. Opposition strikers, an alliance of political parties, unions and business leaders, said they would continue the work stoppage, which has hobbled the vital oil industry and caused widespread fuel and food shortages. Vice President José Vicente Rangel earlier urged a truce for the holiday season and said that the government was willing to hold peace talks through Christmas. Mr. Chávez, who was elected in 1998 and survived a coup in April, has rejected calls for an early vote from opponents who accuse him of driving Venezuela to economic ruin and dictatorship.
