Alighierei Re...This is shameful avoidance...

I would agree that it is a shameful avoidance by the Arabs to make the changes necessary to support their populations. To compete in an industrial society, the Arab nations will have to join that society, or invent a better society. The industrial societies have flourished because they have shown an ability to support rising populations. Even China, who in the recent past has used forced abortion to control their population, is now turning to industrialization and partly democratic society to support their people.

From support of countries whose leaders are fundamentally tyrants,

If you believe this, why do you oppose the US replacing the biggest tyrant in the world today.

I believe will backfire for the US for decades to come...

And of course, I believe the exact opposite, that before we can get peace in the middle east, we must eradicate the causes of violence, poverty and a bleak future for all of the poor. And contrary to what you might think, I don't believe more welfare programs are the future the poor are envisioning as nirvana.

think this is a rather cynical mis-representation of liberal thinking. Probably what conservatives would like to tell eachother.

Is it really. Isn't that the basic tenet of Marxism, that if everybody worked for the common good, and everybody shared in the rewards equally, that everybody would be richer. And after almost 100 yrs of communisn, didn't that theory just produce counties that where everybody was poor, and no one, except the dictators, were rich. I am not sure who said it, but greed is good. Greed is what makes capitalism and the US the most envied nation of rich bastards in the world. Democracy, and democracies ability to control the greed and spred the wealth somewhat, is what make capitalism palatable. Maybe a lot of Arab nations should take advantage of what we have learned to create their own democracies, and their own rich bastards. Maybe then their terrorists will channel their efforts to becoming rich bastards themselves, instead of blowing up children in despair.

Based on that, I suspect she would rephrase her statement to say that the US is upopular in the Middle East and let's be honest, most of the world today.

She did say that. The reasons given for that unpopularity, are ridiculous lies.

we are able to close an eye to human suffering when it serves our material needs,

Like you are demanding we do in Iraq. Don't get involved because they might send more terrorist here. Isn't that closing our eyes to the suffering in Iraq, so we don't have to worry about our material needs here?

ignore that some countries are not democracies for the same reason,

Good one. Now you think we should interfere, and install democracies. Would you make up your mind.

use countries (like Afghanistan) as tools to fight our enemies and then walk away from it when our purpose is served,

Au contraire. The US still has troops in Afghanistan. In fact Lieberman is over there now, smoozing up the troops, so you all will vote for him in 2004. As for peacekeeping, the US is donating 500 million to Afghanistan this yr. in gov. donations and millions more in private donations, has supported Karzai, and has supported the other peacekeeper nations in Afghanistan. Just how many millions has Murray's buddy OBL contributed to clean up the mess he made? Oh thats right, he is so popular, he doesn't dare show his face publically.

support even Saddam when he is the enemy of our enemy, I could go on for a while.

Saddam was only in power for a few yrs, at the time of the Iran, Iraq war, and at the time wasn't near as big of an enemy as Iran; with their Ayatollahs preaching hatred for the US, and attacking our embassy.

I could go on for a while

I am sure you could. You are good at making up imagined enemies(Australia now is it); while ignoring our good deeds. How fair and even handed of you.
