That is the fundamental problem: people are upset and scared about the perception that we are more vulnerable to terrorism. The fact if that we are no more vulnerable now that we were five years ago, maybe less because more countries have joined in free trade and, therefore, have more at stake in fostering a free and unfettered exchange of commerce. Our awareness of the nation's vulnerability has grown because of the act of a few terrorists which we helped by lack of vigilance and lax laws and enforcement of public transport security measures. When the U.S. gets scared there are plenty of political and corporate interests more than eager to exploit it. Since doing the slow, methodical underground work is often secret, usually not glamorous, and seldom results in news worthy headlines, the politicians who feel compelled to do something more visible take advantage of the public's concerns and exploit them mindlessly. Is this war like posture good for America? I think the current emphasis on battle around the world is self destructive, economically ruinous, and childishly stupid. But then what do you expect from a C- student?
