I believe there is very little additional momentum transferred to the ball on a foul tip. However, its existing momentum can be redirected at such an angle that the distance traveled behind the batter can be increased considerably.



How can the distance the ball travels behind the batter be increased considerably if there is no energy transfer from the bat to the ball (the ball thus gaining momentum)?
