Assume an elastic collision (i.e., no loss of kinetic energy) for the sake of argument (as some energy is lost to heat when the bat ticks the ball). What I would like to know is... does energy (momentum) from the larger mass (bat) transfer to the smaller mass (ball) when they make contact thus allowing the ball to travel further than it would in the absence of this hypothesized energy transfer?

Conversely, does contact with the bat act as an inhibiting force on the inertia of the forward moving ball, thus causing it to slow down (and consequently travel less far)?
