But--the DPRK is a really odd duck, and might well respond in unusual ways to ordinary stimuli

One comment that struck me about the DPRK came from one of David Warren's columns. He said that even the South Korean diplomats said rather plaintively that even they could not understand the North Koreans -- the North Koreans used Korean words but "did not talk like human beings".

Tekboy,
As long as we are all being humble on the subject of Korea, do you think there is a segment of SK policos who are looking to combine the SK economy and political system(or perhaps one more autocratic) with the nuclearized NK military? How would such a new state with nukes fare? We know of recent Japanese aggression against korea during WW2--was Korea ever an aggressive force in the area historically? What is Chinas hisoric role here? Does anyone have answers to these questions? mike@toobusyatworktoresearchthis.com

Also, one kind of needs to know a decent amount about what the other players (ROK, China, Japan) really want to see happen, and I'm not up enough on that to judge...

I saw an article recently where it was stated that the Japanese government told Jong's government that if they launched another missile over Japan (satellite or otherwise), they would bomb them...

That's rather strong language from the Japanese government.. But apparently it was effective since they haven't done so again...

But Japan doesn't have the ties to S. Korea that the US has.. And S. Korea doesn't have the influence in Tokyo that they have in Wash DC.. Thus, Jong threatening to invade the south in response to a pre-emptive bombing strike by Japan would likely fall on deaf ears..(except in DC)

Bottom line is Jong is pouting and throwing a tantrum in order to get "his own way".. He thinks he can bully the global community and get them to pay attention to him, and subsidize his despotic rule in exchange for not "disturbing the peace"..

And the only way to deal with these kinds of megalo-maniacs is to ignore them, contain them, and if they get utterly out of line, essentially confront and press for regime change. After all, the guy is relatively young and not expected to die anytime soon... So we'll have decades of grander extortion if we cave in to him as we did in 1994.
