I like the things I find interesting. I may not "like" them as I "like" a friend, but I enjoy them, and like them in that way. I think we use the word "like" in different ways. Those things I find absorbing I can't help "liking". Fascinating is liking, as far as I'm concerned. It isn't that kind of liking that touches the person, it is that kind of liking one has for a good meal, or other things that one uses. I think that kind of liking is different from the kind of liking one has for a friend, whom one (presumably) does not view primarily as a useful object.
