where do "they" get H2 from?

It's all smoke and mirrors. The current cheapest source of H2 if from hydrocarbons.

The main byproduct of H2 production? CO2 ....

The best bet, for the time being, is to take all the tech that went into the hybreds and attach it all to a two cylinder engine.

Just leave out the electro stuff and the result should get about 100 mpg ..

Simple flywheel tech with torque converters .. done and done.

Yes plants can use plenty more CO2 and when they have more CO2 can survive in more arid environments.

The best system for using H2 from hydrocarbons as part of a system that strips the H2 for use as a mobile fuel and oxidises the C to produce electicity and then buries the CO2 in old oil reservoirs etc. Ford and BP are funding research on this at Princeton and I am sure there are other efforts elsewhere.

But even if the CO2 was emitted to the atmosphere there could be gains as central electricity generation is more fuel efficient than internal combustion cars and fuel cell cars are more efficient than the conventional cars too. So there more useful energy could be potentially obtained per unit of greenhouse gas emitted.

Longer term some other renewable energy might be used to generate hydrogen as a mobile fuel.
