Correct what you say. "So for an alternative energy industry to be created, there will have to be some profit in forsaking the current system and building a new one. And it will likely take considerable subsidization as well"

Bush wants 11 billion in subsidies for big oil contributors to drill every last bit of our wilds. Take that money plus the useless SDI deployment money, another 5 billion and you've got a nice start for a Marshall Plan to make hydrogen and other renewables more clean, efficient and deliverable. Also save money with no more Gulf wars and sue that money.

By now most Americans realize that Arab oil is a lot more expensive that $32 a barrel. Add in the defense costs, terrorism and everything else and we're talking a huge price. Even Bush and Gingrich admit hydrogen is the future. Trouble is, the Republicans wont do anything about it until the Big Oil Ticket is out of office. Then everyone can join in. As for ANWAR, we can make up for whatever the potential supplies there are (they're top secret so who knows?) in other ways, including efficiency and conservation, even if that means taxing gas guzzlers. The carrot and the stick approach works. And once it's up and running everyone will get used to it and join in. The Europeans are already well on their way to this goal, way ahead of us.

Silly of you to bring up Oxy-Gore. You know that was a character assasination rumor spread with no basis in fact. Gore's parents own a block of Oxy but Gore has never done anything to reward Oxy ever. In fact in his book he suggests we eventually get off gas and oil altogether. Hardly kowtowing to Big Oil the way Bush-Cheney do every single day with real money, our money. The Oxy-Gore story was invented as a distracted from the real crime which was the ENTIRE oil industry behind Bush-Cheney giving more than 100 million bucks to take over our government and create a phoy energy crisis so they could make tens of billions more. Of your money and mine. You too paid those creeps. So why support them? Like Enron? They were the masterminds. Bush's #1 supporter. Like honest presidents? Bush lied to the press and said he hardly knew Kenny Lay. meanwhile kenny Lay walks free two years after his crimes which cost Americans over 100 billion bucks. And Bush wants him to stay free so he wont talk. 100 billion. Think about that. And you want bankrobbers put in jail?
