Getting off oil gradually and pulling out of there might be the far smarter idea. But Bush is going in deeper and deeper. Maybe in over his head.

AS... this harkens back well before Bush.. The demographic trend present in the muslim world (baby boom) goes back at least 15 years, if not more...

And it will not be solved merely by weaning the US economy off of oil.. (especially if it means adopting costlier energy sources that disadvantage US businesses against competitors)...

It will require a Middle East "Marshall Plan"... a long-term involvement in reshaping the middle east and bringing economic diversity, political and social moderation, and some glimmer of hope to the people in that region that gives them an alternative to waging "jihad"..

It's something that has long been overdue (and obviously not politically correct to discuss publicly). But it has to be done...

The question is whether this nation, and the west in general, have the guts to do it properly.
