Post says Rockwater hopes to flourish among giants

The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that in spite of a
landscape denuded by the market meltdown and dominated by banking giants
that are only threatening to get bigger, executives at fledgling Rockwater
Capital insist they see only opportunity. The Post's Peter Fitzpatrick and
Derek DeCloet quote Robert Schultz, chairman of the upstart investment
management firm, as saying, "If the bank mergers occur there's going to be
more of a place for independents because I don't think everything is going
to be delivered to 30 million people in this country through two
institutions." The performance so far has been mixed. Rockwater reported a
loss of $7.9-million for the year ended Dec. 31. and the firm warns of
continued losses. Rockwater has about $3.5-billion in assets under
management. Rockwater wants to focus on high net worth individuals. There
are no plans for another acquisition on the scale of Yorkton Securities.
But if they are serious about winning over affluent investors, the Yorkton
acquisition might have sent the wrong signal. "The quality in Yorkton was
really non-existent, by bank and larger competitors' standards," said one
unnamed executive.
