Hi Jacob,

From semi equipment perspective, only IC utilization rate should matter, utilization rate of discrete fabs are of little importance. Thus SIA reported utilization of 80% plus, if accurate, is actually good news.

I agree with your thoughts that foundries are actually good barometer of industry conditions....things are clearly incrementally better at TSMC....although utilization rate is still south of 80%. Folks like Chartered are increasingly irrelevant, don't bring anything valuable to the table and are throwing their last hail mary (read ibm relationship...underwriting ibm's process technology development cost)
