Yes, it is true that many Chinese who have been living in the US for many years would not recognize their own country. I bought pears from a man on the street last night in Beijing -- six really good pears for about 50 cents. He was standing outside a movie theatre which was packed with people who paid $6 US to see a movie -- a Chinese made movie called "hero". The man selling the pears had a lifetime of wear and tear on his face. He has no doubt been through some really hard times. But the people who paid six dollars US to see a beautiful Chinese movie -- as good as anything you would ever see out of Hollywood -- they are part of a world that has only existed very recently. These are the millions of Chinese who are buying Nokia phones with cameras, living in new condominiums that they own, and taking their vacations overseas (not all of the vacations because there is a lot to see in China). With one and one quarter billion people, there are many different living standards side-by-side.
