My neighbor took a cruise up the Yangtze River last May....she said the people were extremely nice and the scenery was outstanding. Apparently some kind of canal will be built that will curtail cruises on the river in the future.

My Chinese friend had Grandparents that had fled to Taiwan. Her parents had told her that they had died because if she knew and told anyone they had escaped the family would have been " sent off into the country to fend for themselves..if not worse!). She seemed to think that being sent into the country was like a prison sentence. One evening she arrived home and found her Grandfather in her apartment with her parents ( the one that she thought had died). They left their entire life behind and fled China that night.

Last spring the LA Times had an article that characterized China as a country with an emerging and ever-improving lifestyle for it's citizens. The article stated that China's emerging, new, improved lifestyle will create much more competition for natural resources. The article also described some political problems surrounding the increased needs of such a huge population. US based companies will be smart to position themselves to capture the Chinese markets.

Your posts are the first, eye-witness accounts that I have read that talk of a Chinese population that is definitely improving it's standard of living. I can view various " happenings" in ASia with a different outlook. I would imagine there will be a scramble for control of natural resources as China continues to develop.
