I too would like to see government run more efficiently. I don't think that's a Dem v. Repub thing necessarily.

Health care is a real hot button, and I'm unsure how to deal with it. I was married during the late eighties and nineties to a pharma executive and really had my eyes opened to the amount of influence that big pharma has on government policy (both Bush Sr. and Clinton). It's frightening.

Then there are the demographics: The modal birth year in the US is 1957, meaning the modal age is now 46. We're aging as apopulation and have access to an extraordinary amount of prophylactic and curative medical care. At the same time, we're just learning how many environmental toxins we've been exposed to, we overeat and underexercise. Because of the malpractice insurance debacle, more doctors are calling it quits and medical school isn't as popular a post grad option as it once was. And the nursing situation is teetering on the brink of disaster, with more and more nurses from around the world being wooed to work here.

I think there's going to be a health care devastation the likes of which has never been seen in this country, once the baby boomers reach our seventies and eighties. The government programs for coverage will be bankrupted and health care will go to the highest bidders.

I really hope I'm wrong, but it's something my family is actively preparing for with long term care insurance, trusts, and prioritizing savings now.

End of rant. ;-)
