No I wasn't disputing the effectiveness of the British armed forces. Particularly the Royal Marine Commanders, SAS, etc. You're right about the American technical strength, but there's a big question mark about their effectiveness as ground fighters - witness the (largely uncovered in the US) reports of the farce in Operation Anaconda*. The bitter rivalry between the Marines and US Army. As for Afghanistan I read an interesting account recently comparing the Russian and American experience there. In fact the Russians 'conquered' Afghanistan in only a matter of days - conquered the cities in other words. But they lost the war of attrition. One reads now that the countryside is back in the hands of the warlords and the so called President of Afghanistan is holed up in the city guarded by around 50 American soldiers. The opium trade is in full flower. The status of women is little changed. American positions are coming under frequent fire. America was smart to declare victory and more or less come home, but they are seen as a foreign invader. But who in America knows or cares? No American reporters are on the spot, or if they are their Editors kill their stories, and it's yesterday's news now. The plight of the refugees is pitiful.

* This story was painstakingly put together by a British journalist who pieced together local newspaper accounts in the US by returning soldiers.

The idea of all eyes on guard is, every shot an aimed shot is very important in determining the effectiveness of two opposing groups.

This is most rudimentary albeit solid military thought Jackson. Tell you what....Lets you and me have a pissing match at two paces and see who ducks first...
