That's besides the risk that the governing elite easily avoid the truth of combat, which is destruction and death that should be used only in defense, and promotes the idea of painless, effortless warfare, which leads to dreams of empire.

Sounds like the subject of a future book.

One that should be widely read.

The National Guard (Reserve) are extremely vital in the defense of our country. IMO they are the better substitute for a draft in general as regards the military end of government service. I'm all for service in the government by citizens. Their presence would allow for a leaner permanent structure. The NG and Reserves provide this in the military side of the equation. No thinking taxpayer wants bloat but military defense is mandated by the Constitution and we must remember that, like it or not, we serve for the defense of many parts of the world. Chaos and anarchy are not in anyone's interests.

If the governing elite didn't get the message via the Pentagon and anthrax attacks that they are targets of war also, then we have elected idiots and deserve their rule. I don't limit the defense of this country to our borders and I think the majority, in and out of government, along with the military, agree. "Dreams of empire" are your dreams.
