I agree with all your suggestions, Shiloh, though, as Bill pointed out, only one deals with spending.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, what if the fact that the gov't is huge and inefficient is exactly the reason that, even in a down cycle, our economy is still the envy of the world?

After all, gov't is the greatest make-work entity in the nation. What would the unemployment rate look like if we suddenly had a significantly smaller gov't? Would private enterprise be able to take up the slack?

(This is not a well-informed, supported position...it is merely a "what-if" that sprang to mind...please punch logical holes in it, if merited).
