Paul,

There is no clinical proof that Zicam works as a preventative, nor has the company ever advertised it as such. I don't see any reason to use Zicam as a preventative even though it isn't "ingested", and therefore should not pose the same health risk as zinc lozenges. It would appear to me that Dr. Mossad's comment was directed at forms of zinc that are eaten. If I remember correctly, the bottle of Zicam says not to use it for more than 14 days, or maybe 10.

<So it appears that there is no way Zicam will ever be promoted as preventing a cold, since it can reduce immunity.>

Zicam may not ever be promoted as a preventative, but not for the reason you cite. I disagree that it definitely reduces immunity since it isn't ingested. Obviously that would have to be studied before it was advertised as a preventative. Regardless, the market for Zicam products as a therapeutic are very large so it's no loss if it isn't sold as a preventative. I don't think many people would use it for that purpose although it would be a good PR item.

<The more colds I get, obviously the less I have faith in Zicam. I had hoped it was the cureall>

Zicam isn't a cure-all. It is just the best cold remedy available, in my opinion, and works very well in accordance with its labeled purpose.
