The problem with wondering "why they hate us", for me, is that I don't really care because I think they're crazy.

I thought the following quote came from my father-in-law (deceased) but my husband attributes it to P.J. O'Rourke:

"Not only did we steal their land, we took the part with the good roads."

I expect that he was talking about Mexico, but it does sort of fit the world, in general.

You used to live in California, you must know what happens to the roads when you cross the border into Mexico. Bump, bump, bump. At least that's what happens when you cross the border from Texas.

Why are our roads so much better?

If you're crazy, the answer is that we stole them.

If you're Muslim, the reason you hate Americans is that we support those who are killing Muslims all over the world, in Palestine and in India.

Ley me see, Bill, if I've got this straight. The author likes glass box buildings with no redeeming aesthetic features and doesn't like crumpeldly buildings with no redeeming aesthetic features. Because, he says, the latter derive from, deconstructionism.

Tell you true, I think some of Gehry's buildings are OK:

ptutt.de
images.google.com
duke.usask.ca

Tracinski's gotta lighten up. Now that it's possible to build buildings without straight lines and with compound curves, it's going to take a while for the aesthetic to shake out. Some of it reminds me of art nouveau and art deco. Fun.
