The TTI report also found the U.S. wireless market grew 11 percent in subscriber numbers, though overall handset growth was flat for the year. The year’s total 142 million wireless subscribers included 25.3 million GSM subscribers, almost doubling the 12.3 million GSM users reported in 2001. Meanwhile, AMPS and TDMA subscriber numbers decreased. Shipments of AMPS and TDMA handsets also declined to 1.2 million and 11.2 million respectively, while CDMA handset shipments increased to 31.7 million. “These developments are pretty spectacular,” said William Wallace, a TTI analyst. “They represent some fundamental shifts in the marketplace stemming from the embrace of GSM by two major TDMA carriers, Cingular Wireless and AT&T Wireless.” ----- Anyone else see some big holes in these numbers (all in millions): Tech 2002 2001 GSM 25.3 12.3 AMPS 1.2 > 1.2 TDMA 11.2 >11.2 CDMA 31.7 <31.7 UNK 72.6 ? ----- ------ Total 142 128 All numbers were either quoted from the above link or calculated from other numbers in it. Also, if handset growth was flat in 2002, even with an overall market growth of 11%, where all new customers presumably had to buy a phone, then the replacement market must have had a severe setback in 2002. Was this equally distributed across all technologies? Will those holding off replacements in 2002 come roaring into the market in 2003?
