GOP's real problem in Calif is that they are weak on the environment and social issues. Californians are disgusted that Bush-Cheney want to drill for oil off our coasts, especially after the terrible Santa Barbara oil-spill in 1964. They dont seem to represent people, but industries, mainly the kind that pollute and over-develop. Also many Californians dont like the religious right. We're free thinking and free spirited and we dont want the up-tight prudes making the rules.
