First this SUV thing a lot of people have....There is no difference between driving a SUV than a pickup truck as far as energy "conservation" goes. So drop the SUV label, heck you my as well include pickup trucks, luxury cars, sport cars, RV's, and what about jets?....who is to say that getting 18 miles a gallon is worse than getting 30 miles a gallon, when you can ride a bike or walk...than 30 mph is wasteful. There are too many other factors to make that blanket statement. Otherwise if you drive a car you as "wasting" energy compared to riding a bike. I own an SUV.... And, I'd bet I use less total energy than many people that drive their Honda every day. My SUV may have 4 people in it, if you are driving around in a Honda with two people are you more efficient, or less? If you and I collide on the highway will I have more efficient use of my money having paid more gas than insurance and medical bills? Here in the snow country do I have more efficient use of my money with one good 4-wheel drive vehicle that meets all my needs, or should I have own a Honda for every driver in the family? There is a lot more that goes into the picture, you have no right to say someone is just wasting energy. But it gets worse... I think you should only able to heat one 10X10 room in your house! Anything larger is making you a wasteful person...not to mention that the biggest waste is all the habitat the Californians have consumed for houses to park their Hondas in, so they can dictate to the rest of the country how we should live.... and after all, it is your natural gas bills you're complaining about...and even that is really misleading. American's energy cost is so low that we have the highest standard of living in the world, we pay nothing for energy, (much goes for food production and distribution keeping our food costs low), and giving us much more expendable income that we can choose to spend on Hondas, computers...or gasoline. No way is it legitimate to pick peaks and valleys in the energy market and make an issue out of "rising energy" costs. Lastly... The best thing for the world as far as war goes is free trade. Look at it this way, the Arab world is dependant on the west as customers, more than we are dependant on them for oil...if we don't buy their oil they are in worse shape than we. The reality is, as I've said for the last few years, is that we should consume as much Arab oil as we can, as long as it is cheap we should buy it up, use it, and fill the strategic oil reserve....if prices spike up we can then pump out of the reserve and depress prices. In the end, the free market needs to control the price and effort that will go into alternatives. Californians should slash their taxes, raising them hasn't worked, your government will just find new things to spend the money on. You folks would be much better off if the only reason your state legislators showed up was to cut spending, and much of the regulation. Sam
